What To Expect

Modern Adventures are designed to showcase the best of a destination, and to promote community, sharing and celebration of Alaska's natural wonders. We curate all elements for a safe, immersive adventure in some of the last truly wild parts of North America.

The Alaska Experience

Get ready for a seven-day adventure in Alaska, alongside Outside magazine’s editor-in-chief Chris Keyes. We’ll have prime access to Katmai and Lake Clark national parks, traveling by float plane to camp and trek in nature at its most pristine. We’ll be backpacking and hiking off-trail, challenging both our minds and bodies.

Throughout our adventure, we may encounter short stretches of thick vegetation and experience Alaska's diverse selection of insect species. We’ll be camping in a very remote wilderness, sleeping in tents, relieving yourself in places with a stunning view, and sometimes enjoying all of the above in the rain! This is Alaska at its most pure and exhilarating.

Camping

For the five nights we camp in the wilderness, we'll provides expedition-quality tents, as well as group-sized tarp shelters for enjoying meals in (see Gear & Packing).

As we trek through the Alaska wilderness, we’ll make camp in places very few people have ever seen (everyone will be asked to help set up and break down camp). We’ll get to spend our evenings relaxing, enjoying each others’ company and the meals prepared by our guides as we peer at the surrounding hillsides for glimpses of wildlife, often under a sky filled with more stars than you can possibly imagine!

Our last night is at the Farm Lodge in Port Alsworth, where we can celebrate our backcountry accomplishments with a well-earned shower.

How We Eat

We believe backpacking through the wilderness isn’t a reason to miss out on incredible food! On this adventure we hold our food to a high standard, and our guides prepare a variety of delicious hot meals as we trek.

Breakfasts may include steel-cut oats, scrambles, homemade granola and cereal, locally roasted coffee, assorted tea and cocoa.

Lunches could include an Italian club or torta sandwich, asiago bagels and Alaskan lox, curried tuna pita, or perhaps crackers with genoa salami with a goat cheese spread. We also feature savory and sweet snack mixes, and an assortment of energy bars available throughout the day.

Our dinners could include pasta carbonara, Alaska reindeer rotini, chicken and chipotle enchiladas, and more.

Special Dietary Needs

Traveling with dietary restrictions or allergies can be a challenge, but we’re here to help. Prior to your departure, we’ll send you a questionnaire where you can inform us of any special dietary needs you have. Depending on the information you give us, we will work with our Alaska partners to adjust menus and be aware of allergies and restrictions on our trip. We kindly request that any changes to our menu are based on need rather than preference, as we work very hard to curate an exceptional dining experience that is difficult to change in the remote backcountry.

Who's Going On This Trip?

This adventure is limited to no more than 8 fellow adventurers plus your Modern Adventure team.

Group travel is a wonderful way to meet new people and have shared experiences together. Our Outside+ experiences are fun and inclusive. You can expect to be joined by a diverse group of people in terms of age, background and interests—including solo travelers, couples and friends traveling together. The common unifier is that they are curious, adventurous, and independent. This adventure is for travelers age 18 and above.

Traveling as a Group

We believe group travel is an intimate, empowering and fun way to learn about yourself and others. Like any good relationship, it thrives with respect. We ask that every guest honors the key times in a day to ensure everyone's experience is the absolute best is can be. This is everyone's adventure!

Remember that as a part of your pack, approximately 18 liters will be occupied by group gear, and that everyone will be asked to help set up and break down camp to ensure timely and smooth transitions each day.
