Travel & Logistics

We’re so excited to see you in Alaska! As part of your travel planning, we recommend that you purchase travel insurance that covers your booking for unforeseen events and interruptions of your trip. We also suggest purchasing remote rescue and medical evacuation coverage as a precaution (see Travel Insurance).

Arrival in Anchorage

Be sure to set your clocks—in Anchorage, you’re on Alaska Standard Time (AKST), which is -1 hour behind Pacific Time, and -9 hours behind GMT / UTC.

Trip Start

Our adventure begins at 6:30am on Monday, August 15, 2022 at The Lakefront Anchorage Hotel in Anchorage, Alaska. We recommend that you arrive in Anchorage on Sunday afternoon or evening (see Pre-Arrival Accommodations below for recommendations). If you’re staying at a nearby hotel in Anchorage and would like us to pick you up on the morning of Day 1, let us know and we will arrange it.

On Day 1, we'll start with an orientation and gear check, then we’ll head to the airport for a bush flight over Lake Clark Pass to Port Alsworth. We’ll have lunch on the shores of Lake Clark, discuss the adventure ahead, then take off in a float plane to Katmai National Park.

Arrival Airport

Book your flights to arrive at Anchorage's Ted Stevens International Airport (ANC), a quick 10-minute drive from our meeting point on Day 1. From mid-May through September there are direct flights to Anchorage from more than a dozen US cities including Seattle and Portland (approx. 3hrs, 45min), San Francisco (4hrs, 45min), Los Angeles (5hrs, 20min), Denver (5hrs, 35min), Dallas-Ft Worth (6hrs, 30min), Houston (7hrs), Chicago (6hrs, 45min), Atlanta (7hrs, 30min) and New York-Newark (8hrs).

Transfer from Airport

We recommend scheduling a car through your hotel or hailing a taxi upon arrival at the airport. It's a quick 10-minute taxi from ANC airport to most Anchorage hotels.

Pre-Arrival Accommodations

If you plan to arrive in Anchorage prior to the beginning of our journey, we recommend staying at The Lakefront Anchorage Hotel, which is also our meeting spot on Day 1. Please contact the hotel directly to book, and let them know you will be on a trip with Modern Adventure.

If The Lakefront Anchorage Hotel is booked, we recommend the Hotel Captain Cook, a comfortable luxury option in the heart of downtown Anchorage.

Departure from Anchorage

Trip End

We end our seven-day Alaska adventure on Sunday, August 21, 2022. After lunch and an afternoon hike to Tanalian Falls, we will catch a bush plane from Port Alsworth back to Anchorage.

Departure Airport

We recommend booking your outbound flights from Anchorage's Ted Stevens International Airport (ANC).

Transfer to Airport

After catching our afternoon flight from Port Alsworth to Anchorage, Modern Adventure will provide complimentary transfers to ANC airport for guests with outbound flights. If you plan on departing from Anchorage 9:00 pm or later.

If your flight leaves at an earlier time, we cannot ensure you will make it to ANC airport on time.

If you plan on departing Anchorage at a later date, it is your responsibility to arrange transportation from your hotel to ANC airport.

Post-Trip Accommodations

We hope you have the opportunity to extend your stay in Alaska. If so, we recommend staying in Anchorage at The Lakefront Anchorage Hotel. Please note that any post-trip accommodations are your responsibility to book, and reservations can be made by contacting the hotel directly.

If The Lakefront Anchorage Hotel is booked, we recommend the Hotel Captain Cook, a comfortable luxury option in the heart of downtown Anchorage.
